About the Founder
Janie Teller:
The Study Shack is founded, owned and operated by Janie Teller, M.Ed. Janie founded The Study Shack in 2005 to help support NYC students to be the best version of themselves, and has worked to fulfill that mission for the past 21 years. In that time, Janie has paired thousands of students with dedicated, compassionate tutors.
In addition to her operation of The Study Shack, Janie has a 30-year background in regular and special education, and holds three teaching credentials from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA.) She has taught at the elementary and secondary levels in both public and private schools, and served as a learning specialist for adolescents challenged by learning and/or emotional issues.
As a mom herself, Janie enjoys working with other parents to help them feel supported with their child’s academic journey.
Our Tutors
Each member of The Study Shack’s tutoring team is selected after an extensive interview process where we assess their experience in education and tutoring, pedagogical practices, and dedication to supporting students.
Our tutors have graduated from accredited colleges and universities throughout the country, including NYU, Columbia Teachers College, Hunter, and UCLA, with degrees in Early Childhood Education, Elementary and Secondary Education, and Special Education. Many of our tutors are former or current teachers in addition to their expertise in tutoring.
Once selected, tutors complete orientation to become familiar with The Study Shack’s expectations and processes. With permission from parents, tutors connect with their students’ teachers to work collaboratively to best support students. After each session with a student, tutors create reports to inform parents of their child’s progress.
Using their training and expertise, our tutors provide individual attention and focus to help students succeed academically and beyond.
